글램 록이란?

글리터 록(glitter rock)이라고도 함. 남성 뮤지션들은 여성스러운 화장과 반짝거리는 여성 의상을 입고 무대에 나서는 등 극적 페르소나를 도입하였으며, 우주시대의 미래주의로 규정되는 매혹적인 음악 작품을 무대에 올렸다.

스스로를 찬미하고 퇴폐적이었던 글램 록은 1960년대 후반의 주류 록에 대한 반발이라고 스스로를 규정하였다.

사회와 록 문화의 변방의 관점에서 글램 로커들은 비평가 로버트 팔머가 지적한 것처럼 ‘반란에 대항하는 반란’을 일으키고 있었다. 그 운동은 또한 헤비 메탈, 아트 록, 펑크 스타일이 포함되어 있었지만, 음악적으로 글램의 핵심에는 하드록과 팝 형식의 헤비 기타 사운드가 있었다.

글램 록 운동의 주요 뮤지션 가운데 하나인 데이비드 보이는 〈세상을 판 사람 The Man Who Sold the World 〉(1970)과 〈지기 스타 더스트의 등장과 쇠퇴 그리고 화성에서 온 거미 The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars〉(1972)를 제작하면서 훌륭한 무대 공연의 기준을 보여주었다. 또 다른 영국 글램 로커로는 슬레이드, 게리 글리터, 마크 볼런의 T. 렉스가 있었는데, 그들의 〈전자적 전사 Electric Warrior〉(1971)와 〈더 슬라이더 The Slider〉(1972)는 글램 록의 거친 파워 팝 버전의 전형이 되었다. 영국 글램 록과 연관된 다른 뮤지션으로는 엘튼 존, 퀸, 록시 뮤직, 스위트를 비롯해 1980년대 초의 컬처 클럽이 포함된다.(인터넷 퍼옴)
